Canadian Childbirth Foundation Launches Crowdfunding Campaign for the Pregnant Behind Bars Iniative

All funds raised will go toward providing books, films and magazines on women’s health for prisons and youth detention centers across Canada.

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA – October 1st, 2016: Pregnancy can be an anxious experience for any woman: fears of miscarrying, birth defects, and the possibility of a difficult labor are natural when carrying a child. For pregnant women in prison, however, natural anxieties can become terrifying experiences. What happens if you cannot get access to proper healthcare? What happens if you are not let out of your cell when your water breaks? What happens if you miscarry and no one knows what to do?

The number of women behind bars in Canada has grown by 800% in the past 30 years. Two-thirds of these incarcerated women are women with young children under the age of 5. There are no specialized medical or informational facilities available to pregnant women in prison, and no extra food or special clothing are provided. To make matters worse, once a child is born, too many women are only able to visit with their child through glass.

In response to this growing crisis, the Canadian Childbirth Association announces the Pregnant Behind Bars initiative, along with a crowdfunding campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/pregnantbehindbars to fund the initiative’s reach across Canada. Contributors to the crowdfunding campaign have the option to receive a number rewards, including signed copies of the national bestselling book, Pregnancy & Childbirth Secrets – A Prenatal Teaching Guide by Gail J. Dahl, Founder of the Canadian Childbirth Association. All funds raised will go toward providing books, films and magazines on women’s health for prisons and youth detention centers across Canada.

“We cannot pretend to be a civil society when pregnant women are not treated according to their needs,” stated Gail J. Dahl, Founder of the Canadian Childbirth Association. “Unfortunately, in Canadian prisons there is little support to differentiate pregnant inmates from any other. That lack of support includes clothing, dietary needs, and access to prenatal health care and information.”

Help transform our prison institutions to the modern, humane standards they should aspire to be. This is an investment for our future. Your donation to the Canadian Childbirth Association – Pregnant Behind Bars initiative will work for years to come in assisting thousands of women who are pregnant and alone behind bars in Canada.
